U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is Hiring a Survey Technician (Hydrographic) Near Louisville, KY

Duties

  • Make annual and special reconnaissance and condition surveys of District Waterways on 23 ft and 30 ft survey boats to-ensure authorized channel depth and width are maintained and Government mooring facilities are assessed and maintained.
  • Perform condition or reconnaissance surveys along the navigation channel or mapping surveys on water areas to determine river depths and potential navigation problems.
  • Utilize electronic hydrographic sounding, side scan and multi-beam equipment of the navigation unit on 23 ft and 30 ft survey boats.
  • Determine the proper calibration, operation, maintenance, and repair of such systems to include all components, sub-systems, and various other methods while conducting hydrographic surveys.
  • Manage and/or performs all operators' maintenance on boats, motors, vehicles, and on surveying and depth sounding equipment.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire and maintain a valid state driver license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a boat operator's license for boats/vessels in accordance with ER 385-1-91 within twelve (12) months or U.S. Coast Guard license.
  • Work outside the office involves exposure to the elements, with weather varying from extreme heat to cold weather, uneven surfaces, climbing, stooping, bending, standing, and steel toed boots, eye protection and personal floating devices.
  • Incumbent is required to wear protective equipment and/or clothing (e.g., PFD, hard hat, coveralls, gloves, safety footwear) as appropriate.
  • Incumbent may be required to work weekends, holidays and/or shiftwork.
  • The work is primarily performed in the field, requiring travel approximately 50% of the time.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. For the GS-07. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes completing basic math and trigonometry computations; trouble shoots equipment problems and makes minor repairs or adjustments to equipment and motor vehicle operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as land surveying, hydrology, oceanographic research, or similar related field. (Note: you must attach a copy of your transcript.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-08. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operation on a motorized boat or trailering a 16' or larger trailer or performed boundary, construction, Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), or other land surveying methods. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics, and/or combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-09. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing condition or reconnaissance surveys along the navigation channel or mapping surveys on water areas to determine river depths and potential navigation problems. Performs hydrographic surveys, foundation surveys, and sunken vessel/object searches. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
OR
Education: a master's or equivalent graduate degree or full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; onlyin those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Transcripts must be attached.
OR
Combination of experience and education: specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and more than one year but less than the required education stated above. Compute the percentage of the requirements, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definition above (must provide transcripts if qualifying based on education).
